Joint City Council and Park Board Meeting to Discuss Proposed Recreation Center Redevelopment Project
A joint City Council and Park Board meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, July 1 at the City Council Chambers at 7:30 p.m. to discuss a proposal received by the Batavia Park District and the City by Preferred Development to participate in a downtown redevelopment project.
The Boards will discuss how the proposed plan could fit into their respective goals/visions established to support the community and the costs associated with the project. There will also be an opportunity for public input after the discussion. The proposed concept includes the construction of a brand new McDonald’s, 62,000 sq ft new recreational facility, 5,000 sq ft retail building and multi-use parking structure.
Preferred Development has entered into a purchase contract for the shopping center at the west side of Island Avenue and has asked the Park District to come to the table with plans for an anchor facility that would promote commerce, satisfy recreational needs, support the city's vision and revitalize the heart of downtown Batavia. If approved the City would participate in the proposed project with the incorporation of a multi-level parking structure and 5,000 sq ft retail building fronting Wilson St. The project also provides for a brand new McDonald’s to be built on the corner of Wilson St and Island Ave. Plans have not been formalized but conceptual plans are available for viewing on both the City and Park District web sites www.cityofbatavia.net; www.bataviaparks.org.
