The history of the Batavia Park District begins in 1969 when the citizens of Batavia , Illinois voted to form an agency to serve the recreational needs of their growing community.

The underlying mission of the Batavia Park District is articulated in its Mission Statement. This statement defines the Park District goals and reason for existing and sets a course for the future.

Over the year, the Park District has received numerous awards for its parks, facilities, programs and employees. The diversity in programs and activities for all age groups continues to make the Batavia Park District a trendsetter statewide.

The Park District works in cooperation with numerous organizations within the community. The Park District's Partner-Affiliate-Friend "PAF" Program is the first effort of its kind for a governmental agency to team up with local organizations in an effort to create a reciprocal relationship. The Batavia Park District values its relationships within the community and surrounding area.

In an effort to give local businesses an opportunity to connect with the community, the Batavia Park District has developed a comprehensive sponsorship program. We offer top-notch special events and family activities year-round.

Five Batavia residents are elected to serve varying staggered terms to serve as Park Board Commissioners in the general spring election. Board meetings take place the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Bartholomew Room at the Civic Center. Public notices are posted monthly on this website.

The Batavia Parks Foundation serves as a catalyst and partner toward civic and community initiatives. This volunteer board is working on a number of foundation special event projects of which benefit the resident of Batavia.

Fun Facts about Parks and Facilities

Encompassing over 350 acres and 39 park and facility sites, the Batavia Park District takes pride in its ability to serve the residents of the District.

To meet its goal of providing a safe, well-designed, well-maintained, and easily accessible system of parks and facilities, the District takes a long range approach. The Executive Director and the Director of Planning & Development work closely with the local municipalities and developers to review potential park sites, judge site appropriateness and create a park presence. Land-cash ordinances are the primary method for adding park land to the District's holdings.

Five regional and nine community parks of 15 - 30 acres each offer opportunities for group activities including playgrounds, pavilions, picnic areas, softball, soccer and baseball fields. There are 14 neighborhood parks which occupy one to six acres; mini parks (there are five) occupy about an acre.

  • Taking an inclusive approach, the district actively seeks community input about play equipment and typical neighborhood play activities when planning new parks.
  • About four miles of bike trails are found within the district. With Batavia at its hub, bicyclists can traverse the entire Fox River Trail system.
  • For winter enthusiasts, cross country ski trails are accessible at a half dozen points including Depot Museum , Quarry Park , Clark Island, Laurelwood Park and Big Woods Park.
  • Runners and walkers enjoy more than five miles of trails in the district.
  • The District's guide for allocating park land corresponds to a city ordinance of 10 acres of park land per 1,000 people.
  • As the city continues to grow, the district is pursuing a strategy of linking several small parcels of land within a new subdivision to provide a larger park, or linear park area.
  • The District's jurisdiction is larger than city boundaries. It serves residents in 17 square miles including the city and township, parts of Aurora, North Aurora and two sections of Blackberry Township.

In addition to its parks, the District owns and operates the following facilities:

  • Civic Center, provides space for programs and administrative offices
  • Eastside Community Center , a 20,000 sq. ft. facility that has more than doubled the district's programming space and includes a newly renovated gymnasium
  • Depot Museum , designated a National Register Historic Site, houses a collection detailing Batavia 's history
  • Harold Hall Quarry Beach, a spring fed, award winning swimming beach which draws more than 65,000 attendees each season
  • Laurelwood Park includes a boat launch, fishing and picnic areas and a meeting room within the Batavia Boat Club
  • Riverwalk, a 12-acre community inspired park replete with gazebo, brick walkway, and two foot bridges overlooking the Fox River in downtown Batavia
