Big news for two Batavia parks:
Batavia Park District has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the State of Illinois to enhance two of our community’s favorite destinations: The Riverwalk and Engstrom Park.
The announcement was made at the June 16 Park Board Meeting by State Senator Linda Holmes and State Representative Matt Hanson. The grant is part of the State’s Member Funding Initiative.
What’s coming?
Batavia Riverwalk: new synthetic turf at the playground to enhance this beloved gathering space. The turf will maintain ADA accessibility to the park and ensure the playground remains safe, attractive and functional for the children who use it.
Engstrom Park: three new restrooms featuring flushable toilets, making game days, family outings, and extended park visits even better. These facilities enhance the park's functionality, ensuring it continues to serve the community as a welcoming and well-maintained destination.
Thank you to Senator Holmes and Representative Hanson for investing in Batavia’s parks and helping create even better spaces for our community to connect, play, and enjoy the outdoors.

Congratulations, Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela!
At the June 16 Batavia Park Board meeting, State Representative Matt Hanson presented Allison with a copy of House Resolution 594, officially recognizing July 11 as Unplug Illinois Day.
Allison was honored for her leadership in co-creating the Unplug Illinois campaign, an Illinois Park and Recreation Association strategic master plan initiative that has grown into a statewide celebration encouraging people to “plug into” the many opportunities available through local park and recreation agencies.
"Unplug Illinois was built on a simple idea, that some of life's best moments aren't found on a screen,” she said. "It's rewarding to see a campaign that began as an idea grow into a statewide movement recognized by the Illinois General Assembly."
Thank you, Allison, for your vision, leadership, and dedication to creating meaningful connections and experiences for our community!
